Shared or Private?

Do not buy before you read this.

I was on a call last week and a team asked me whether to start on shared infrastructure or go straight to private.

Good question.

It comes down to where your process is. Here is how I think about it, and where I see people switch too early.

Start with shared infrastructure

Shared infrastructure gives you faster setup, lower cost, and a managed IP pool. What you give up is control. Other senders can affect the reputation of the pool.

While you are still testing outbound, I think that is fine.

You get to see what your sending actually looks like before taking on a dedicated IP and everything that comes with it.

I would stay on shared until your sending is steady.

Check before you switch

Delivery drops, and the first thing people want to do is blame the infrastructure and buy dedicated IPs.

I would slow down and check three things first.

1. Who you are emailing

Poor data leads to bounces, complaints, and low reply rates. A dedicated IP does not remove that problem. It puts the damage directly on the sender reputation you own.

2. How you are sending

Sharp increases in volume can trigger filtering. If your sending changed recently, fix the pattern before changing the infrastructure.

3. What supports the send

Check DNS, authentication, warm-up, and inbox placement. If the setup is off, switching will not help.

A lot of things affect delivery, and the pool is only one of them. Rule out the rest before deciding that switching is the fix.

Choose private infrastructure when you are ready

Private infrastructure gives you dedicated servers and IPs. Other senders stop affecting the reputation of your IPs.

I would move once:

  • Sending volume is stable

  • List quality is tightly managed

  • Someone is watching domain, mailbox, and IP health

That is when dedicated IPs are worth it.
